TWISTED VS. BRAIDED CONSTRUCTION
The oldest form of rope is formed from a twisted construction, because this utilises short filaments. The load is transferred between filaments by friction: the filaments are forced together by the twist. The disadvantages are that a twisting action is set up under load which tends to unravel the rope if one end is free, with subsequent kinking and looping when unloaded.
These problems are avoided in braided ropes, in which the yarns are aligned in many directions. They are very flexible but at the expense of high inter-yarn abrasion when the load is cycled. Their properties are dependent on the braid construction and braid angle.
TWISTED (LAID) ROPE
There are two general categories of rope construction: twisted and braided. Twisted, or laid, rope is formed by coiling three strands together in the same direction. The fibres within each of the three strands must twist in the opposite direction as the strands in order to produce a balanced rope, that is, one that hangs straight and resists kinking. Twisted rope must be fused and taped on each end to prevent unraveling
BRAIDED ROPE
Braided rope is far less liable to kink than a traditional laid rope. Three general categories of braided construction exist:

Diamond braid with a core

Diamond braid without a core (called hollow braid)
|
Diamond braid is manufactured by weaving ends of yarn over and under, the same fashion in which the maypole dance is done. If there is a core around which the rope is braided it cannot be spliced. If no core exists, the rope is called "hollow braid". Hollow braided rope can be spliced and is very flexible, but can flatten during use. It is only found in small sized rope. Solid braid is very firm, round and tightly woven with a special lock-stitch construction which prevents unraveling when cut or torn. Solid braided rope stands up especially well to the chafing of blocks and pulleys because of its rounded shape. This construction cannot be spliced. Braided rope tends to snag when used as docking line if the pilings are rough.
